Namaste from India!

FOOD

Just a few short days after my last post, I was on my way for a 2 week stay in India!  While I have managed to find plenty of eats, the “vegan” concept is still a bit foreign.  I usually get offers of boiled veggies, fish, and chicken.  Still – it hasn’t been all that challenging considering the plentiful vegetables and legumes!

FITNESS

Yoga every day!  I certainly went for runs before heading to India, but haven’t since I’ve been here.  The air quality is such that I wouldn’t go outside anyway – even with a group, and our crazy long days in residency leave me little desire to do hard cardio.  So – every morning has been yoga and it’s been great.

LIFE

Well – I’m in India!  This is the last of my non-US residencies, and I have one more of those (in April) before graduating in May!

I arrived in Mumbai in New Year’s Eve.  Despite being awake for about 38 hours, I still hit up the NYE bash at the Opium Den bar in the hotel with several of my classmates.  Many others went to Dubai to stay with a classmate and ring in the new year.

I spent a week in Mumbai and, like much of what I’m seeing of India, it’s a study in contrasts.  There are those who are very well off (2-3% of Indian’s are wealthy by international standards – and that’s a LOT of people, considering there are 1.2 billion people.  That means there are more wealthy in India than the total population of Australia!), a rising middle class, and some abjectly poor.  And you can see it all in a very short radius.

Mumbai has heavy British influences, though with an Indian spice.  I found much of it quite pretty.

We left Mumbai after a week, flew to Delhi, and then took a 6 hour bus ride to Agra.  It took 3 hours to get from the airport to the highway because traffic is so horrible – and it’s always this bad.

We rolled into Agra quite late, checked into our rooms, and went to bed.  We had to be in the lobby by 6am to get to the Taj Mahal before it opened – hoping to see a sunrise, but it was foggy (or smoggy).

My Life (mostly) in Pictures!

FOOD

It’s been a good few weeks on the food front.  D and I have pledged to go out to eat less, so that means more fun food at home!  And…since I do most of the cooking, they more or less eat what I eat!

Not that they’re complaining – heck, even D decided one evening to make dinner and whipped up an amazing tofu stir fry!  Other yumminess includes tacos, smoothies, salads, wraps, falafel burgers, squash, pasta, homemade breads and soymilk, and Indian food, just to name the highlights of the past weeks!

last night's multicultural dinner! Homemade baked falafel patties with tzatziki sauce, served as a burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, and a side of Italian garlic, spice, and oil pasta. Don't judge...

Running and yoga – as usual!  Can’t complain though, they’re what’s most readily available to me.

D and I are talking about building a home gym over the course of the next few months.  We both want to workout, but finding the time (or the desire) to go to the gym just isn’t there.  All 3 kids really want this to, so for now we’re doing research and pricing and will go from there!

LIFE

Well 3 weeks of life is a LOT of life!  With that said, no major complaints or anything.  There have been a couple illnesses, but nothing tragic (thankfully).  Between work, school, and family, I’m pretty much never bored!

I got to see several classmates last week, which was just amazing.

FITNESS

Quite literally, the only workouts the past two weeks have been runs.  It’s all I’ve had time for.  Luckily, I’m pretty much okay with that!

LIFE

You know, I think time is a tricky thing.  It goes by so quickly when you’re not paying attention!  Two weeks is a long time between posts, and I’m sorry.  Between D working nights, me getting a ridiculous sinus/ear infection (completely lost my hearing in my left ear for almost 2 days – freaked me right the heck out), a last minute work trip, and regular life….it’s remarkable how fast the time flies.

Mother’s day was nice – though we should have checked the weather for that whole “tropical storm” thing.  Alas, we went to the theme park anyway, managed to get one roller coaster down – before the sky opened up and the storms hit!  Seriously though, it was still a great time.

It’s the Little Things

FOOD

Everyone knows I love food.  Love cooking it, love eating it, and love making dishes for other people.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make this even more special.  Like my husband’s boss gifting me with several huge CSA hauls of hers that she just didn’t have time to go through.  Eggplant, shallots, TONS of greens, and all sorts of fun stuff.  It was a very sweet gesture, and I had tons of fun with it all.

I was traveling all last weekend, and had some special meals whipped up, including this amazing Moroccan Vegetable Tagine, and the owner came and sat with me for awhile explaining how it was made, why he moved to the US, and how much I remind him of his little sister.  Again, a little thing, but created a  memorable evening for me.

6tag_081114-165400

And today, my Dad called.  He’s a couple doors down from the best spice place on earth (The Spice House in Milwaukee), and he was just calling to see what I need from there (hello poultry seasoning and onion powder!).  Thoughtful thing to do.

FITNESS

It is no surprise that the past week or so has seen yoga and running as my workouts.  It’s actually been a struggle the last two weeks with finding (aka….MAKING)  time.  D has been on nights and I’ve been exhausted.  I don’t like to think I forget how much he does around here, but I think for awhile there I had.

It seems like I’m always freakishly busy doing one thing or another, and I forget that he does all the little things (and a lot of the big things too!).  He does special little things with the kids, and even with me.  Silly things like texting me pictures of flowers or being a sounding board as I’m trying to solve some problem or another.  A week with him on nights and us barely seeing each other, certainly reminded me of just how big those little things are.

Anyway, on the fitness front, I mostly went for shorter runs and did yoga at home.  On the weekends, I hit the studio, but not during the week.

LIFE

I’m happy to say that D is back on days again!  Although he’s still not successfully flipped his sleeping schedule back yet.

While he was on nights, I did the Halloween thing with the kids, tried to keep everything together for a week, and then went out of town for several days.  I did get to spend a day with A though, and that was definitely a fun day.  Lunch at our favorite Pho joint, Whole Foods, and a few hours at the mall rounded out a fun mother-daughter day.  I miss her, and while soup and shopping seems like a little thing, it was pretty big for me.

Spicy Pho for me!

Spicy Pho for me!

And for my favorite little thing….D’s morning pictures!  Every morning he snaps a selfie with R as he’s dropping her off to school.  Not a big deal at all, but when I tell people about it (or post their daily shot with #morningpicture), I realize how incredibly special it is.  When I’m traveling, I find myself flipping through week’s worth, and it always makes me smile.

6tag_031114-082906

So there you have it.  Me coming to the realization that life’s best moments aren’t the big ones I keep planning for, but the little ones that happen around me every day.

Food, Pets, and Theme Parks. My Fav Kind of Week

FOOD

Well, a full week home and I’m back to my obsession with Indian flavors.  And tacos.  Next step?  Blending those obsessions…curry tacos?  Yeah…I’m down for that.  Stay tuned.

I made a big batch of a ginger/carrot soup on Sunday and had that for most lunches this week, along with granola bar leftovers, and fruits and veggies and salads.  Thai too during a working lunch that made me grateful to have a co-worker who also loves Thai food.  And perhaps it’s because I really want Fall to hurry up and get here, lots of oatmeal….which is weird because I don’t typically love oatmeal.

AC and I went out Tuesday night for tacos and drinks.

final dinner! A nice kick of spice, but not too overpowering.

FITNESS

Yoga…running…the usual.  Despite the hectic week, I did get in a few good workouts.  Two longer runs and two hot yoga classes and one yogaglo class here at home.  In my travels earlier this month, I had the opportunity to introduce two people to yogaglo.com, and hopefully have some new converts!  Seriously, for the price of a single drop-in class, you have unlimited classes for a month.  That’s just cool.

I’m still fretting for my lack of daily data though.  I admit, that when I got my first FitBit (the Force….of which I was one of the lucky ones who got skin burns from wearing it….and then the One, which was nice and tiny…but now somewhere lost in Charlottesville), I became addicted even more so than normal to my physical activity.  How many steps did I accomplish?  How do I rate among my friends who have them?  And if I’m lacking, how many more walks around the block before I’m back in the lead?

On top of this, my GPS sports watch sucks.  I have the Nike+ and while I loved it at first (it’s not bulky on my little wrists), Nike has totally stopped supporting it.  The bloody thing takes forever to connect to satellites before I start running (often leaving me pacing in my drive for a good 10 minutes), and the website…once a fun and interactive game…is now basic and rarely works.  I’ve been asking around on Facebook, and I think it’s time I switch back to a Garmin.

LIFE

It’s more or less been a good week.   Busy, yes, and glad to be back in the office, but also stressful for the early morning and long nights.  Also someone I care about suffered a medical emergency yesterday, and that’s been a concern for sure.  Not for me, but for her and her family.

AC and I were originally planning to hit up a hot yoga class together on Tuesday, but ended up going for tacos and drinks (beer for me, bourbon for her!).

I took R to Busch Garden’s last night for a kick off to the holiday weekend!  Just the two of us, and we did two loops through the park, rode a ton of rides, and enjoyed an incredibly beautiful evening.

Today I woke up early, did some reading, watched a movie, and finished up all the massive amounts of laundry a big family piles up during a week….most of this before the rest of my family stirred!

Ginny interrupting my reading. Nothing new.

Tonight my son is having a LAN party (Local Area Network…an IT-geeky way of saying everyone brings their own computer, we hook them up to our network, and they play games like crazy all night long and eat junk food).

D is out at the Oceanfront taking sunset and star pics, and R and I are relaxing and having a quiet evening!

So yeah.  Really nice to be home, be with my family and friends, eat good food, and sleep in my own bed!

Blogger of the Year Award Goes To….

Not me! I know, and I'm sorry. Craptastic blogger lately, and I know it. Sad thing is, I think about blogging every day…and them the entire day gets away from me.

Not to whine or anything, but I've had 15 hr days, 3 days per week for the last month, and the days I'm am home before 10pm are me trying to make up to my family for not being there all those other days.

I'll get better, I promise. Blogs may be short and sweet (just like me!), but I do have a plan to get them back on track.

In the mean time, a brief update on the last few weeks.

Run, work, yoga, work, travel, work, study, work, cook, work, spend time with my family, work.

R turned 10! And A came home from college for the weekend to celebrate. She's kicking butt at school and I'm very proud of her. My son won the lead in the school play, and my husband has been picking up double duty due to my crazy schedule.

I went to WI for a very cool conference and have spent the weekend visiting my family. I go home tomorrow, and I can't wait.

I also will have a giveaway coming up (a sort of penance) as well as a review or two, so stay tuned for that!

Until then….I give you my highlights in pictures…

I’m a Google-Diagnosis Rock Star

FOOD

The past two days have been green smoothies for breakfast. They were both pretty much the same, except the greens. Water, banana, mixed frozen fruit, and kale yesterday, and subbed in Romaine today. This morning I made a double batch to take to work in case I got hungry at the office mid-afternoon!  I ended up drinking the leftovers after getting home from work.

I didn’t eat lunch yesterday because it was too hot to eat. I snacked on frozen fruit (while trying to find a way to shove myself into the freezer), and had the rest of my spicy tofu soup for dinner.

I also made a batch of banana bread. My bananas were about to turn and it was either peel and freeze them or make bread. I chose to bake the bread – but used the toaster oven so I didn’t add to the already oppressive heat of the house by turning the oven on!

For lunch today I made another big batch of cucumber gazpacho from Going Raw. This has quickly become my new favorite raw soup.  Judita Wignall is brilliant, and if you’re on Twitter, follow her @judita

I whipped up a quick Indian meal for dinner tonight. It was a long day and I forgot to pre-plan dinner, so after taking a look around, ended up with the below. It was quite tasty!

Ingredients

*1/2 block pressed tofu, cubed

*1/4 chopped onion

*1/2 tbsp. minced garlic

*1 tbsp. Rogan Josh season

*1 can lite coconut milk

*about 1/4 – 1/3 head cauliflower, chopped into bite size pieces

*2 handfuls kale (so scientific right?! But you know exactly what I mean!)

Directions

*heat a non-stick pan on medium-high. When hot, add tofu and onion and sauté for a few minutes.

*add the garlic and sauté for several more minutes. You don’t want the tofu dark brown, but a nice light stir-fry.

*add the seasoning, stir well.

*add coconut milk and cauliflower. Turn heat down to medium-low, cover, and cook until your desired degree of mushiness of the cauliflower.

*add the kale, recover, and cook another 5 minutes.

*salt to taste and eat it!

So really the basics of this recipe are the onion, garlic, and coconut milk. The spice blend can be as varied as you want. I have my hippie spice box (I am a spice snob) and it’s fun to just see what I have and what might taste good together. I went with the Rogan Josh, but almost did the Bangkok or Tandoori blends.

FITNESS

Yeah, I got nothing on this yesterday or today. Yesterday I was home dealing with maintenance people and, with it 90 degrees IN the house, I did enough sweating.

Today was just a really long day and my plan of going for a run was killed by rain storms.

LIFE

Well, I will say life is better than it was two days ago. And I’m a Google-diagnosis GODDESS. Yes…I was dead on with what was wrong. Bad motor. It finally got fixed in the late afternoon yesterday. The house really didn’t get well cooled down until sometime in the middle of the night, but hey…it’s fixed and that’s pretty much all that matters.

With that said….Tuesday night was pretty horrific. I didn’t end up sleeping outside, though it was tempting. R slept on my bedroom floor because my room has more windows and more likely to have some type of breeze. Not sure it did, but we didn’t care if she crashed on our floor.

As rough as our night was, I felt the worst for A. She spiked a fever late that evening and had no relief at all. She stayed downstairs on the couch all night since the living room was the coolest in the house – relatively speaking. She mostly watched TV and alternated lying on the couch and on the wood floor where it was a little cooler. Poor baby.

I stayed home yesterday (A ran a fever all day, even with alternating Tylenol and Motrin every 4 hours), but it broke just before bed. She slept in my room a bit while the AC guy was tromping around the house, but was mostly just miserable. I’m happy to report that the only thing she has today is a sore throat and an insufferable case of boredom.

The tree guy “might” fit us in this weekend. The plumber called and I have to call him back to make an appt. to fix the upstairs shower (forgot to mention that one), and the guy to fix the moisture barrier and do the treatment called today and we’re playing phone tag. D is taking the plumber, I’m taking the fungal treatment, and we’ll collectively figure out tree-guy. Whew!

I went to my new office today! All my stuff was there (except a printer) and I managed to unpack, get a ton of work done, and had a very good day. The commute sucks – especially in the evening – so instead of a 10-15 minute commute, it’s 45-60.

As usual D took R to day camp and snapped morning pics both days (I love that – it’s been almost 2 yrs that he’s done that with her every day).

Now, I’m going to go make lunches for R and I (not D since he has offsite meetings all day tomorrow and won’t be in the office), and prep all the ingredients for tomorrow’s dinner (slow cooker red beans and rice), and then drag my happy a$$ off to bed.

G’night peeps.

Spiders Keep Me From Working Out

FOOD

This morning was a total smoothie on the run. Normally I use my Vitamix to make really big smoothies that get me through a full morning, but today I was running a bit late (jet lag sucks) and used my travel blender. It blends right into a to-go cup, and is just faster. It also doesn't make as much, but it was better than nothing!

Of course I had to use my VVC mug for java this morning too!

Lunch was a salad from the Whole Foods bar. I had meetings out in Virginia Beach all morning, so it was perfect to swing by, grab a salad, and head back to my office. I loved how colorful it was!

Dinner was Indian food! I haven't done an Indian meal in a while, and have been wanting to. I only did 3 dishes this time (usually I do 5). Homemade garlic naan (not pictured since I didn't eat it – would have screwed up the whole gluten thing), red lentil dhal, and brown basmati rice.

Yesterday, I made a few flavored waters. R helped me pick mint from my herb garden, and we made mint water. I also sliced up half an English cucumber for some cucumber water. Both were very tasty.

FITNESS

Today was beautiful. 85 degrees, sunny, and very low humidity. I really, really wanted to go for a long bike ride. Unfortunately, my bikes are in the garage (the road bike and the hybrid), and I know we have spiders in the garage, and D wasn't home to “check” my bikes for the beasts, so I was too chicken to ride. I did yoga instead. Don't judge.

I also started aching to run. Since I was diagnosed and stopped running as my primary form of exercise and stress relief, I've been trying to stay positive. Lots of yoga, spin classes, Zumba, and checking out various classes has kept me busy….but it was a day like today that made me pissed off again that I can't run. I'm hoping that if I'm symptom free by the end of summer that I can start again. I know that means starting from scratch, but right now I don't really care. I just want to lace up and go!

LIFE

Today was a rough day. I think I finally got used to the west coast time zone just in time for me to get home and need to get to work in the morning. Even my boss remarked that I looked tired in our morning meeting. Then she laughed her a$$ off when I relayed my travel hell. Yes, Albuquerque…we will meet again…only this time under MY terms….

Other than being ridiculously tired, it was a good day. I mostly caught up on what I missed while off, and my youngest has officially changed swim teams. It's a longer drive to practices, but a more disciplined team. I think she'll get much more out of it.

In the mean time, here are a couple random pictures of the day….

I collect buttons from places I travel, and D has taken to picking them up for me as well. My RunCrissieRun tote is getting pretty loaded after this last week! I have tons of new buttons to show off. Always a conversation starter when you're walking around with a Tofurky pin on your bag with the picture of a pig….

My fluffy Bumble getting comfy on the chair (okay, so she's more plump than fluffy, but that's okay…).

Today's morning picture! D still takes one of he and R when taking her to school every morning, but I haven't posted one in awhile….

A picture of a book cover I saw in Powell's books in Portland. Makes me secretly wonder if Bumble has been trying to kill me for the past 12 years…

Bum holding my hand last night because she's clearly happy I'm home…

I'm using a new blogging app on my iPad, so if this post looks totally jacked, I apologize!

FOOD

It’s sad to say, but I’ve only cooked one big meal since Friday night.  That meal had 8 dishes, which means tons of leftovers, but still.  Just one meal.

Breakfasts have varied between smoothies (like this morning) and leftovers.

vanilla coconut milk, spinach, and frozen strawberries. Simple, but yummy!

Yesterday I made a tofu cheezy scramble tacos for breakfast, and that was fun!

tofu scrambled with nutritional yeast, coconut milk, apple cider vinegar, tamari, and spices. I mixed in some of the leftover basmati rice, and served it taco style on corn tortillas

Sunday’s dinner was the main event.  I spent about 5 hours making various Indian dishes that culminated in a big feast with lots of leftovers.  On the menu was:

Garlic Naan, red lentil soup, chickpea masala, cardamom basmati rice, yellow split-pea puree (that was the favored dish), curried potatoes and carrots, cabbage salad with mustard seeds, and a beet, mint, and yogurt condiment (So Delicious Plain Coconut Yogurt was used).

Lunch and dinner yesterday was a bowl of leftovers.

FITNESS

This weekend was mostly runs, with one bike workout.  With the crazy schedule with D and the kids, I had to work around them a lot.

I have my first injury of the season.  A fun one too!  I pulled a lower butt muscle on my right side.  The pain extends down to about 4 inches above the back of my knee.  I went to the gym yesterday to do some strength training; the same workout I did last Monday; but I could only manage one set of squats before I just hurt too much.

So here’s what I did.  It seems to be feeling a bit better today though, so I’m hoping for a quick and easy run this evening.

LIFE

The kids and their friends had a blast at laser tag Friday night.  While they were all sleeping on Saturday, I took R to Williamsburg to do some outlet shopping.  Both she and M needed new shoes badly, so we took care of that.  It was a really  nice day, so we just walked around in the sunshine, had lunch, and then headed home.

We got home just after everyone started waking up.  I took a short nap, and the rest of the day was nice and lazy with an early bedtime!

Sunday was all about kitchen time for me.  D took R out to the movies and the mall (she’s he did something special with A and M on Friday, Sunday was R’s turn).  He came home with an Xbox Kinect!  Apparently there was one at the laser tag place, and the kids were going nuts with it.  D hooked it up while I was making dinner….and my kids were going nuts!  Here are some pictures of them doing some dance game.  D even picked me up a Zumba one!  Can’t wait to try it.

Yesterday was my final hat class at Knit Witts.  I’m very excited to say that I finished!  And it looks like a hat!!!!  I will say that there got to be a point where I had to move from circular needles to 5 double-pointed needles – and start doing advanced math to figure out how many stitches needed to be on each…it was a complicated mess, and I’m amazed it still turned into a sock.  Happy, but holy cow, it’s sort of crazy working with 5 needles at one time!

The next few days are looking to be quite crazy as well.  If all goes as planned, my friend will be admitted into the hospital tonight, and then induced in the morning to give birth to her 3rd baby.  While she and her hubby are focusing on that, I get to stay and play with her two kids, who are 5 and 2 1/2.  We have some fun planned (lots of cooking, games, and swimming if we can), so it’ll be a good time with them as they await their new baby brother.  I’m sure I’ll have plenty of fun pictures of them for the blog!
