Rewind and Fast Forward

Here's a quick 2013 recap in each of my typical categories, and a look to 2014!

I will admit, that I think I lost some of my creative mojo in the kitchen this past year. It's not for lack of desire, but more for lack of time. I had a few posted recipes, but mostly what I wrote about were great dishes I made from cookbooks, websites, or other bloggers (NOTHING wrong with that!), and restaurant meals.

I also fell back on some bad habits in 2013 – lots of dining out and more processed foods than I like to admit. 2014 will be a focus on those two areas as well!

In the new year, life won't be any less busy, but I do plan to make more time to spend in the kitchen. I do plan to prep better so we always have good food on hand, and aren't so tempted to get take out or eat crappy food. I also plan to keep ramping up the smoothies, juices, and raw foods because they make me feel the healthiest.

It's been a strange year on this front. I was faced with a less than pleasant diagnosis of RA, and it really got in the way of physical activity for the first big chunk of the year.

I ran a 10K in April with CT, and that was my last one for some time. I was in a lot of pain for days afterwards, and I had to give my body time to heal and then ease back into activity. There were several months where I didn't think I'd be able to run again, and was planning to focus on yoga and swimming.

I did quite a bit of yoga in 2013 and that's definitely something I plan to continue in 2014.

I did start running again in the latter part of 2013, and even did a 5K on my birthday with friends! I'm hopeful that running will still be a major part of my life, and I so far have planned 2 big races in 2014 – the Shamrock 1/2 Marathon in March, and the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in April! Hopefully my training will continue to go well, and I won't have pain like I did last year.

I also hope to try other activities too – there are certainly plenty of options around me! Stay tuned for that one!

It's hard to summarize and entire year's life experiences! I will do my best (without writing a novel).

I had some fun travels this past year. New York and Baltimore in January, New Orleans in February/March (for work, but my sister came for part of it too!), DC in April & September, Portland in May, road trip to Wisconsin and Ohio in June, and Wisconsin again in Sept. Of course there was my birthday trip to Seattle in October, which was awesome! I also had some “local” VA travels to Charlottesville and Luray. Can't fail to mention all the Busch Gardens adventures either!

My eldest graduated from high school and started college! That's a big deal!

My husband's Crohn's in is remission and he's currently off all medications (also incredible).

We welcomed two new family members – Ginny and Tonks. They're rescue kittens, and are wonderful, silly, and funny.

I've been diagnosed and managing RA without any medications, which has me very proud. On the other side of the coin, I've suffered from horrible chronic hives for nearly a year now, and it's making me crazy. Hopefully I'll find a way to address and manage those (since physicians are stumped). That's a goal for 2014 for sure!

I've got to spend some great time with family and friends this past year. I've realized how many wonderful people are in my life, and for 2014, I want that to be a big focus as well.

Work has been very good – very busy – and isn't going to ease up in 2014 either!

So – novel complete! This new year I hope is full of family, friends, good times, good health, and low stress!

So Happy New Year to you all! I hope your 2014 is everything you want it to be 🙂

I am a 45 yo busy career single mom and doctoral student attempting to find her inner athlete, be a gluten-free(ish) vegan, and find a way to balance it all without going crazy! I love to cook, read, run, box, do yoga, dance, travel, and learn as many new things as I can - which often gets me in trouble.... I am passionate about life in general, and if I didn't write about it, I'd probably implode.

    1. I has been a full year! Didn’t realize how much so until I tried summarizing it 🙂
And me too! And thank you 🙂 Hope it stays in remission all this year (and future years) as well!
