Puppy Kisses and Sword Fights


As I sit here drinking my green smoothie, I’m reflecting on what I ate yesterday.  Or more to the point…what I didn’t eat yesterday.  I was so insanely busy and hadn’t prepared anything really in advance, that I mostly skipped eating all day.  Not something I’m proud of.  I did manage to munch a Clif bar around 7 though.

Today, I will not make that same mistake!  I have a big (and I mean BIG) green smoothie, and will round out lunch with a BAS and some of my leftover awesome soup.


Yesterday was a rest day, but I did sign up for a 40 mile bike ride in March.  When I was a kid, I went biking a lot with my Dad.  WI participated in the Rails to Trails conservancy, and a lot of old railway tracks were converted to really nice bike trails.  I hadn’t heard of anything like that in a long time, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out we have that here in VA too!  So, on March 6th, I’ll be biking the High Bridge Rails to Trails with a group of regional riders.  We’ll bike, eat, relax, bike some more, repeat.  I’ll be riding my hybrid vs. my road bike, and get to use my bags to carry snacks, camera, and fun things.  I have to say, I’m really looking forward to it.


Ah, yesterday was a heck of a day.  Started at 6am and didn’t end until midnight.  I finally got home last night around 1030 where D finally opened his bday gifts.  It was too late to eat the pineapple upside down cake I made him, so I felt really horrible about that.  It was certainly a good day, but a long one.  I’m even happier having that free 30 minute me-time in the morning.  And as much as I wanted to sleep in a bit today since I went to bed so late…I didn’t.  Up at 6.  That’s 3 days in a row!

I briefly mentioned Lent yesterday.  I don’t always do something, but the past few years I’ve really tried to.  It was Lent a few years ago that I first embarked on giving up gluten, for example.  This year I’m focusing on food, yet again.  I am the first to admit that while I do eat a healthy diet “most” of the time, I still have far too many processed and convenience foods in my life.  I’ve been doing a lot of reading about anti-inflammatory eating (long story I’ll get into later), and I think this is the perfect time to move away from those easy foods.  So, for Lent….no more processed foods.  That means pastas, crackers, breads, pre-packaged hippie granola bars (aka, my Clif bars), and focus on eating whole foods.  Just….whole foods.  It shouldn’t be hard work – I mean, it’s just as easy to peel a banana than it is to pop open a box of wheat thins, right?

It’s going to be challenging because I’m leaving for New Orleans in 2 weeks, but I think I’ll be ok.  So there’s my Lent mission.  More active steps towards a healthier body.  I think it’s a worthy mission indeed.
